Una-Lam is now completing a project for the Ambler Area YMCA in Philadelphia, PA. It includes a lobby and pool enclosure (treated glulam is often the first choice for indoor pools because of its durability in a humid environment.) The lobby features a square hip roof with diagonal arches (shown in the drawing below) that presented a challenge for our design and production teams.
This photo shows the upper arch (shown in brown on the drawing above) being fabricated in our finishing department. You can see the ridge cut we made on the upper arch surface (on the left) and where we cut out material on the top to create the square peak connection (in the foreground.)
Below, you can see the back side of the upper arch and the connections where we will frame in the lower arch (shown in the drawing above in orange.) The lower arch is actually made of two pieces. When all of the material is done, the three parts of the arch assembly will be shop fit and matched, then shipped to the job site.
